About Us

About the John R. Turner Scholarship Fund

The John R. Turner Scholarship Fund was established to help improve the quality of life for the residents of Breathitt County, Kentucky. John R. Turner’s desire was to give every student the opportunity to go to college regardless of race, religion, or economic background. It was also his desire for everyone to be given the opportunity to improve his or her educational level without economic hindrance.

John R. Turner knew that a community of well educated citizens would result in an improved quality of life that he dreamed about. The John R. Turner Scholarship Foundation expects to achieve that goal.

About us

John R. Turner

The John R. Turner Scholarship Fund is made available through the Marie R. & Ervine Turner Educational Foundation, Inc.  John R. Turner was the son of the late Marie R. & Ervine Turner.  He spent his entire life in Breathitt County, Kentucky.

John R. Turner served our nation as a paratrooper in WWII; he served as a Kentucky Senator in our district for eight years; he served as President and chairman of the Board of Directors of the Citizens Bank & Trust Co. in Jackson, Kentucky from 1972 until his death in 1998.  He was involved in many community affairs, such as the Jullian-Carrol Airport and the Breathitt County Industrial Foundation.  We believe that John R. Turner could look ahead in the future and see the impact this scholarship fund would have on the lives of Breathitt County citizens.  This dream unfolds with the John R. Turner Scholarship Fund.
